3 Possible Things You Can Do to Repair Hard Drive Bad Sectors

3 Possible Things You Can Do to Repair Hard Drive Bad Sectors

Traditional hard drive carries multiple mechanical parts which degrades over time and affect its standard operation. Hard disk platter is one such equipment which plays the crucial role in saving and transferring the stored data. Due to its magnetic nature, the surface of the platter starts wearing out more often than normal. Once the magnetic area of the hard disk platter becomes damaged, it can’t be used by the system to store further data as well as the existing data become corrupt or damaged. Damaged area on the platters are known as Bad sectors of hard drive which will result in data loss of that particular area.

Bad sectors can also surfaced by physical damage delivered by dropping or throwing it on the floor. It is impossible to repair the damaged sectors physically, there are still some way out to repair it if the corruptions are logical (soft bad sectors) by running disk error checking tool in Windows or running disk utility in Mac. These utilities are designed to cooperate bad sectors smoothly so that it won’t hamper the saved data consistency and not damage its nearby sectors.

There are specially two types of bad sectors on the hard disk which may ends up in making your data corrupt or unreadable.

Soft bad sectors: Such problems arises due to software malfunction, read/write head problems which scratched the data area of the hard drive and makes data become unreadable by the operating system. These bad sectors are fairly common and can happen with hard drive of any age. The easiest possible solution to get rid of the soft bad sectors is by completely formatting or erasing the hard drive. Formatting will fill zero bytes on each and every sectors of the hard drive and make it ready to be used once again.

Hard bad sectors: Any mechanical problems with the hard drive itself can result in hard bad sectors. Such bad sectors has tendency to damage its nearby sectors and soon, makes the entire hard drive with loads of bad sectors enough for making it completely failed. Hard bad sectors can’t be repaired and the best bet is to copy/move all your data immediately and purchase another hard drive to continue using your system without any trouble. Using hard drive recovery software will not help at all in such circumstances as the drive already becomes unreable by the BIOS and therefore, recovery software too cant read it anymore.

Investigating Bad Sectors

There are few simple steps to find out whether your hard drive having bad sectors; however we suggest you to follow the extensive method of pin pointing the bad sectors on your hard drive.

Disk error checking: Windows have inbuilt utility that performs detailed analysis for files and folders and check for their consistencies. In case you’re experiencing problem with scan such as crashing, showing error while checking disk, freezing etc. , it might be a sign of failing hard disk as the bad sectors might preventing the normal operation of disk error checking operation.

Surface scan test: This test is performed on the hard drive with suspected with bad sectors symptoms. While checking, it’ll check and mark the bad sectors and use spare sectors to replace them.

SMART Tool:It performs the series of test on the problem hard drive and gives exact record of health status of problem hard drive including the bad sectors count.

Once you found that the hard drive has fairly large number of bad sectors, you should immediately start seeking for alternative options to repair it or replacing the whole hard drive (if your budget allows).

Repairing bad sectors
Bad sectors can result in major disaster and all your hard disk data soon become inaccessible. While it’s almost impossible to get back data from the damaged sectors, you can try repairing the logically damaged bad sectors so it won’t affect the remaining area of the hard drive.

Follow steps carefully mentioned below and see if you can overcome with any or all the bad sectors you may have found during scanning.

#1. Check Disk Utility

Microsoft Windows comes with an inbuilt disk repair utility to fix minor or major problems with the system such as problems with the volume, cross linked files, bad sectors, directory related errors and more.

You can run this utility directly from ‘My Computer’ > Windows Explorer or using elevated command prompt window. Below are the steps to run this utility from ‘My computer’:
  • Open ‘My Computer’ by double clicking on it or directly press ‘window’ button + E.
  • Right click on desired hard disk volume/partition and choose properties for which, you want to check errors. In case you are not sure which volume to select first, start by selecting any volume and if the problem is not resolved, follow the same procedure to check errors for another volume.
  • On the Tools tab, click on Check Now button located under error checking section.
  • Pop up window will open and ask you to choose the desired task to perform. Ensure that you’ve check mark the two boxes stating ‘Automatically fix file system errors’ and ‘Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors’.
  • Click on Start to begin the scanning procedure.
Note: This utility wants exclusive access on the volume you’ve chosen to perform disk error check function. Also, the whole procedure may takes little longer time depending on the size of the targeted volume.

#2. Utilities provided from hard drive manufacturer
Famous hard drive manufacturer such as Western Digital, Seagate or Maxtor provide their own drive check utility such as Data Lifegaurd Diagnostics, Seatools for Windows and PowerMax.

These utilities were designed to perform error check function on the hard drive of only relevant manufacturer except WD Data Lifegaurd Diagnostics which generally detects hard drive from any manufacturers and attempt to repair bad sectors.

These utilities are fairly easy to use and runs in wizard based interface. Users with basic to advanced computer knowledge can efficiently use these tools.

#3. Disk Checkup from PassMark

It is a little different and comparatively easy to use utility which clearly draws barrier between normal and problem hard drive by executing tests based on the series of attributes. It comes with prebuilt SMART diagnostic tool which fetch all the required details from the hard disk and later, compares it with any normal hard drive which has nearly new or in perfect condition.

All about E mails or What E mails tell about you A COMPLETE STORY

All about E mails or What E mails tell about you A COMPLETE STORY

A COMPLETE review on what your email address says about you. Probably this has become very popular nowadays that email addresses are required for the living of common people especially the people who are working in offices, companies, etc.
So you can create your email Id with many providers like Gmail, hotmail, mail.com and many more............
.........................................
So lets see a complete review in e-mail Ids.........
.......................................
What does your email address says about you? What do you want it to say about you?
........................................
I grew up in a world without the Internet until I reached 15 years old. At that point AOL came onto the scene… America online! Great I thought but I live in England? Nevertheless, it was the start of a dramatic shift in the way communication happened; communication between one human being to another, between businesses and people, between people in the same room.
................................................
The Internet as powerful, revolutionary, and incredible an entity it is, comes with some strings attached. For the first time in human existence we are faced with the challenge of creating an online representation of ourselves. We have more tools to refine our online image than ever; more ways to refine what we show people, what we choose not to show them, and the platform we use. If you are still not convinced we should think about our online image, I’d ask you to reflect on the times you casually browse an old “friends” Facebook page, trying as hard as you can to not pass judgment, or ascertain the quality of their life, by the content in front of you.
So what does this have to do with email address choice? Does it matter if someone tells you they areJohnsmith@msn.com vs.johnsmith@gmail.com vs.johnsmith@lycos.com? Lycosreally?........
..................................................
I can vividly remember the first time someone gave me their @mac.com email address, it was the virtual equivalent of “Excuse me do you have the time?” “Sure let me just check my Rolex.” It begs the question, if people are assigning status to an email address, looking for some sort of semi-tangible value, when I’m applying for a job should I use gmail? It seems to be universally accepted as the go-to search engine & email provider. Perhaps it shows I’m forward thinking,I keep up with technology! This actually makes a lot more sense when taken in the context of a job application; if someone sent me a resume with @hotmail.com I would probably think twice..
................................................
And then… there are the @googlemail.com people. Where did they come from? Are they deliberately articulating a difference? Perhaps they feel it sets them apart from the crowd? If I were to place a bet, I’d guess they are the same folk that respond to “You’ve won 100 million dollars, all we need is your social security number and date of birth” emails.
....................................................
I feel this is all part of the underlying theme of this article: the need to create an E-Persona. The alternative is rebellion and simply not caring, perhaps keeping the same email address for the next ten years. I’ve actually heard people relate it to the steadiness and reliability of the person behind the old school yahoo account; but I find this highly ironic given the unreliability and steadiness of the very service they are referring to.
............................................
There are always exceptions to the rule: I know a couple of CEO’s that still use Hotmail to communicate. They tell me proudly “Nobody will ever expect it!” To which I reply “That’s great, but what about the 3,000 junk emails you need to hunt through to find the genuine email?”
..........................................
I wonder if we may look back and laugh at gmail, in the same way we do AOL? As being dated and providing an electronic time stamp. It is interesting to see the way we interact with technology as Internet users. We often share the same options but make very different choices, and this is beauty of the freedom the Internet provides.

Everything You Need to Know about Hybrid Drives

Everything You Need to Know about Hybrid Drives

We live in the world where our digital stuff gets compact but their capabilities seems improved over a time as well as several advancements were made to make it superior in performance, have high usability and acceptance rate, deliver best value for money etc. Same case were applies to our conventional hard drives which now comes in variety of higher storage capacity and sizes which gets reduced to its lowest, merely 2.5 or 3.5 Inch for Ultrabook or tablet PCs. Many other improvements were made to deliver higher performance rate, reduced time for starting PC or opening applications etc.

One major change took place that is instead of using platter for storing your digital information, many modern drives (commonly known as solid state drives and hybrid hard drives) uses flash chip based storing area, that reduces duration to copy or move data, boot Windows or initialize heavy applications/games.

This all becomes possible only after creating the caching algorithm (an inbuilt mechanism comes in devices firmware) which generally stores information about recently used applications, boot history and registry details. So, the system wont need to look for those specific details and instead, they only initialize the caching files and fetch all the details which the system requires to boot and start Windows as well as immediately start all the startup applications. As results, you can boot system and initialize applications faster.

However, because of using flash chips and modern firmware, solid state drives costs were so high that it hardly meets the budget of normal home PC user such as normal 128 GB SSD costs you around $135 or so, whereas a 2 TB of traditional hard drive would be purchased in the same cost. So if youre a computer warrior and needs high storage capacity wishes to have high PC speed, you can use hybrid hard drives (combination of both SSD and traditional HDD) to store all your documents and digital media files in hard drive and install applications as well as Windows on SSD area.

How Hybrid Drive exactly works?

The way hybrid drives operate is pretty simple and easy to understand. It has no spindle motor and platter at rest most of the time which saves lot of power and produce much less heat as compare to mechanical hard drives, and thus heavily increases its life. As hybrid drives uses flash memorys buffer (not volatile in nature) to store data, there is no risk of loosing your valuable data when power failure strikes or system suddenly restarts.

Every time you access data from the platter, some extra amount of data is fetched and stored in the buffer. This is done in hope of future data requirements and providing fast availability for further requests, thus ultimately improves booting speed and keeps it reducing for further boot ups. The system speed will get increased to 4 times higher than it was before.

What so special about Hybrid Drives?

Seagate, the giant hard drive manufacturers, in 2007 introduced first flash chip based hard drive created by physically integrating both SSD and HDD, entitled Solid State Hybrid hard drives (SSHD) a.k.a. Hybrid drives. Though, Seagate announced their first hybrid drives release for public use in later 2010 named Momentus XT 7200 RPM.

Later, Western Digital and SanDisk join the trend and collectively introduced their first hybrid hard drives in the summer 2013, most thinly hard drive in history, named WD Blue. As like Momentus hybrid drive from Seagate, WD Blue uses the same small amount of NAND flash memory to boost performance and gives the same capacity to store large files. Itll available in various sizes from 8 GB to 24 GB of NAND flash memory and somewhere around 500 GB of hard disk drive capacity.

However, instead of using caching through firmware as in Seagate Momentus, WD uses driver software which is more relevant to computer operating system and readily improves PC speed even further as time passes on. However, this would suppose to be more prone to fail even by a low level of corruption to computer system and thus, your whole system might becomes unbootable.

This way, you can increase speed of using your PC up to 4 times. PC World experts has performed worldbench7 test on the Seagate 750 GB hybrid drives and found it little faster than the mechanical hard drives though much slower than the original solid state drives.

Comparing capabilities of SSD, HDD & Hybrid Drives

Which one will best fits you or which is better among hard drive, solid state drives and hybrid drives? This is a quite typical question though, but fairly easy if youve a clear picture of what exactly you need either speed or performance or both.

Hard drive is a default storage device and used since decades ago.  It delivers the maximum storage capacity you need to keep you thousands of songs or even hundreds of movies. However, traditional storage technologies were failed to deliver the performance especially when the sizes filled with user data. Solid state devices were created to deliver the speed but limited in capacity and have high prices than hard drive. All the said devices are limited somewhere and wont provide all the benefits that is speed, performance and capacity.

To overcome these challenges, Seagate in conjunction with Samsung introduced the concept of hybrid drives by combining all the benefits of solid state drives and hard disk drives. This way, user will get the desired storage capacity and have enough capability to deliver the desired speed. Hybrid drives were specially created to overcome with failing or damaging problems and to be considered as very less frequent in dying or giving data loss phases throughout their life.

This article clearly explains points about the available high capacitive storage medias for current and upcoming generation. You can take joys of high speed environment while giving extra layer of protection to your highly sensitive data with these mightiest storage devices.
